Surfing the web using a virtual private network (VPN) or a proxy server has a lot of benefits that you can enjoy, aside from ensuring that your online browsing activities remain private and secured.

For many, being able to connect to the internet anonymously is certainly a good computer skill, especially when one has the ability to use a virtual private network (VPN) for privacy and security. A VPN is usually available through a paid service that keeps a person’s web browsing private and secured over public WiFi hotspots either at home, office or in public areas. VPN’s can make a user access websites or contents that have regional restrictions, such as video streaming sites and can even hurdle a government censorship restriction easily.

VPN or a proxy server serves as a secured an encrypted tunnel connection between the user’s computer and the websites that the user wishes to visit on the internet as soon as the user connects to a proxy or VPN server that is located in another location, particularly abroad. The user’s traffic then passes back and forth using the server’s connectivity, with the result, the user can browse any websites they wish they can visit by using the geographical location of the server or the IP address and not the user’s real IP address and location.

Once the user has successfully connected to the proxy network or VPN’s tunnel, it will be very difficult to spy or hack the connection of the user. Only a person who has a high-level computer knowledge or comprehension can crack this technique but there is no single case that documented that a person successfully breached a VPN network or proxy server because they usually end up tracing the HTTPS connection which is still not mitigated currently.

VPN is very good in spoofing the user’s location by making it appear that the user’s current location is somewhere else. If you are browsing in the United States, the VPN service provider or the proxy server will make it appear as if the user is currently browsing in the United Kingdom or somewhere else which is why regionally restricted sites and other online services are accessible for free.

For the most part, however, there are instances that a VPN network or a proxysite cannot let a user use it, especially when it comes to matching the country of origin of the user and the VPN network’s country of operations.

Speaking of VPN network’s drawbacks, there are instances that a VPN only have a limited use especially in countries that have high-level censorship in accessing restricted sites, particularly China, and North Korea to name a few where VPN has little to no power because of the government’s restriction to accessing sites such as social media giants Facebook and Instagram.

Anything more critical than that like very critical anonymity is proven to be very hard to achieve even using a VPN.

A VPN network or a proxy server may be limited in some countries, but around the world, it is the number one tool to discover the limitless world of the internet the way it should be discovered.
